WHAT IS ANXIETY?

Anxiety is a common and natural response to stress, but when these feelings become overwhelming, persistent, and disproportionate to daily challenges, it may indicate an anxiety disorder, such as generalized anxiety disorder. These disorders manifest through excessive worry, nervousness, and fear, impacting daily functioning and quality of life. Understanding anxiety is the first step in addressing its hold.

ANXIETY RISKS

When left untreated, Anxiety can pose significant risks to both mental and physical health. It can lead to a range of issues, such as sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating, and strained relationships. Physical manifestations might include increased heart rate, gastrointestinal problems, and a weakened immune system.

BIG SKY Treatment provides outpatient care for a range of anxiety disorders, including Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Separation Anxiety Disorder, and anxiety that co-occurs with depression, PTSD, trauma, or substance use disorders. Many people who seek anxiety treatment are also managing a related condition. BIG SKY Treatment’s integrated approach addresses anxiety and any co-occurring conditions simultaneously, rather than treating each in isolation. Anxiety treatment is available in person at our Kalispell, Montana location and via Virtual IOP across Montana, Colorado, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Massachusetts, including members of Indian Reservations in those states.

Anxiety is a natural, adaptive response to stress. It becomes a clinical disorder when it is persistent, disproportionate to the situation, and begins to interfere with daily functioning. The clinical threshold is not about how much anxiety someone feels, but about whether that anxiety is controlling their behavior: avoiding situations, disrupting sleep, impairing concentration, straining relationships, or driving substance use as a coping mechanism. If anxiety is shaping major decisions about how you live, work, or connect with others, it has moved beyond normal stress response and warrants professional evaluation. One in three adults will experience a diagnosable anxiety disorder in their lifetime. It is the most common mental health condition in the United States, and it is highly treatable.

Anxiety disorders manifest across physical, psychological, and social domains. Physical symptoms include frequent headaches, muscle tension, rapid heart rate, palpitations, excessive sweating, digestive issues such as nausea or IBS, and chronic sleep disturbance. Psychological symptoms include persistent excessive worry, difficulty concentrating, a sense of being constantly “on edge,” irritability, and heightened fear of future events. Social symptoms include withdrawal from relationships and activities, avoidance of social situations, difficulty maintaining close relationships, and reliance on alcohol, benzodiazepines, or other substances to manage anxiety. When multiple symptoms are present across more than one domain, a clinical assessment is the appropriate next step.

Anxiety and substance use disorders are among the most common co-occurring conditions. Many people with untreated anxiety turn to alcohol, benzodiazepines, cannabis, or other substances to manage overwhelming fear, worry, or panic, creating a cycle where the substance temporarily relieves symptoms while ultimately worsening the underlying anxiety disorder over time. Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant that disrupts the brain’s anxiety regulation systems, and benzodiazepine dependence frequently develops in people who were originally prescribed them for anxiety management. At BIG SKY Treatment, anxiety and co-occurring substance use disorders are treated simultaneously within the same integrated program because treating anxiety alone without addressing substance use, or vice versa, rarely produces lasting results.

BIG SKY Treatment’s anxiety program draws on evidence-based therapeutic modalities that have demonstrated clinical effectiveness for anxiety disorders specifically. These include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which identifies and restructures the distorted thinking patterns that fuel anxious responses; Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which builds distress tolerance and emotional regulation skills; Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), particularly effective when anxiety is rooted in trauma; Motivational Interviewing (MI); mindfulness and stress reduction strategies; and individual, group, and family therapy. For clients at our Kalispell location, Experiential Therapy — including equine therapy, wilderness therapy, art therapy, and music therapy — is integrated as a complement to clinical treatment, offering embodied, hands-on experiences that help regulate the nervous system in ways talk therapy alone cannot always achieve.

Yes. Evidence-based psychotherapy — particularly Cognitive Behavioral Therapy — is considered a first-line treatment for most anxiety disorders and has demonstrated outcomes equivalent to or better than medication for many people, with more durable long-term results. Our clinical program incorporates the full range of evidence-based therapeutic modalities that are effective for anxiety without pharmacological intervention. For clients whose anxiety requires medication management alongside therapy, BIG SKY Treatment can coordinate with prescribing providers as part of an integrated care plan.

Trauma, including childhood adversity, abuse, loss, accidents, and other overwhelming experiences,  is one of the most significant risk factors for developing anxiety disorders. When the nervous system experiences trauma it cannot fully process, it can become chronically dysregulated, producing persistent anxiety, hypervigilance, and fear responses that no longer match the actual threat level of daily situations. This is why many anxiety disorders, particularly Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Panic Disorder, have trauma at their root even when clients don’t initially identify themselves as trauma survivors. BIG SKY Treatment’s trauma-informed approach to anxiety treatment addresses this underlying driver, not just the surface symptoms, using therapies including EMDR, CBT, and DBT that are specifically designed to process and resolve trauma-based anxiety.

The duration of anxiety treatment varies based on the type and severity of the anxiety disorder, the presence of co-occurring conditions, and individual progress. At BIG SKY Treatment, most clients engage in outpatient or IOP programming for eight to sixteen weeks, with progress assessed regularly and treatment plans adjusted accordingly. Anxiety disorders are highly responsive to structured, evidence-based treatment — many clients experience meaningful symptom reduction within the first several weeks of consistent engagement. Aftercare and alumni support are available following the primary treatment program to maintain progress and prevent recurrence.

Yes. Most major insurance plans cover outpatient mental health treatment for anxiety disorders, and BIG SKY Treatment accepts Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana, PacificSource, Allegiance by Cigna, Montana Medicaid, TRICARE, and TriWest. Under federal mental health parity laws, insurance plans that cover medical treatment are required to provide equivalent coverage for mental health conditions including anxiety disorders.
