BIG SKY Treatment provides outpatient mental health care for anxiety, depression, PTSD, and trauma, as well as co-occurring disorders — mental health conditions that occur alongside substance use disorders. Our programs are designed to treat the whole person, recognizing that mental health conditions rarely exist in isolation. Treatment is available in person at our Kalispell, Montana location and via Virtual IOP across Montana, Colorado, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Massachusetts, including members of Indian Reservations in those states.

Mental health treatment addresses conditions like anxiety, depression, PTSD, and trauma through therapy, behavioral interventions, and clinical support. Addiction treatment addresses substance use disorders through a parallel set of evidence-based approaches. Many people need both simultaneously — this is called dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder treatment. Research consistently shows that treating only one condition while leaving the other unaddressed significantly increases the risk of relapse and symptom recurrence. At BIG SKY Treatment, mental health and addiction treatment are integrated by design, not offered as separate tracks.

A co-occurring disorder — also called dual diagnosis — means experiencing a mental health condition and a substance use disorder at the same time. Common combinations include anxiety and alcohol use disorder, depression and opioid addiction, and PTSD and substance abuse. The two conditions often fuel each other: people may use substances to manage mental health symptoms, while substance use worsens the underlying mental health condition. BIG SKY Treatment specializes in co-occurring disorder treatment, addressing both conditions concurrently within a single integrated program.

BIG SKY Treatment delivers mental health care through a trauma-informed, evidence-based clinical framework. This means every clinician is trained to recognize how past trauma shapes current mental health symptoms, and treatment is built around that understanding rather than symptom management alone. Therapeutic modalities include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Motivational Interviewing (MI), individual therapy, group therapy, and family therapy. For clients at our Kalispell location, Experiential Therapy — including equine therapy, wilderness therapy, music therapy, and art therapy — is integrated into the treatment plan as a complement to clinical care.

Yes. BIG SKY Treatment’s Virtual IOP delivers the same evidence-based mental health programming as our in-person program through a secure telehealth platform, for both adults and adolescents. This includes individual therapy, group sessions, and family involvement. Virtual IOP mental health treatment is available to residents of Montana, Colorado, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Massachusetts, including members of Indian Reservations in those states. In-person mental health treatment, including our full Experiential Therapy Program, is available at our Kalispell, Montana location.

Trauma — including adverse childhood experiences, abuse, loss, accidents, and combat exposure — is one of the most significant underlying drivers of both mental health disorders and substance use. People who have experienced trauma are significantly more likely to develop anxiety, depression, and PTSD, and are also at higher risk for developing addiction as a way of managing overwhelming emotional pain. At BIG SKY Treatment, trauma is treated as a root cause, not a side issue. Our trauma-informed approach means every program — whether treating anxiety, depression, PTSD, or co-occurring substance use — is designed to address trauma at its source.

Yes. Most major insurance plans cover outpatient mental health treatment, and BIG SKY Treatment accepts Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana, PacificSource, Allegiance by Cigna, Montana Medicaid, TRICARE, and TriWest. Mental health parity laws require most insurance plans to cover mental health treatment at the same level as physical health treatment. Contact our admissions team at (406) 309-7500 for a free, confidential benefits verification specific to mental health services.

These are distinct but frequently overlapping conditions. Anxiety disorders involve persistent, excessive worry or fear that interferes with daily functioning. Depression is characterized by persistent low mood, loss of interest, and impaired functioning. PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) develops after exposure to a traumatic event and involves intrusive memories, avoidance, and heightened reactivity. Trauma refers to the broader psychological impact of distressing experiences and is often the underlying driver of anxiety, depression, and PTSD. BIG SKY Treatment offers specialized programs for each condition — and because these conditions frequently co-occur, our integrated approach addresses them together rather than in isolation.

Yes. BIG SKY Treatment’s Adolescent Outpatient Program addresses mental health conditions — including anxiety, depression, PTSD, and trauma — as well as co-occurring substance use, for teens. Adolescent mental health treatment is available both in person at our Kalispell, Montana location and via Virtual IOP across our full service area. All adolescent programming uses age-appropriate therapeutic approaches with structured family involvement throughout.

If mental health symptoms — persistent anxiety, low mood, intrusive memories, emotional numbness, difficulty functioning at work or in relationships, or using substances to cope — are interfering with your daily life, professional treatment is worth pursuing. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from outpatient mental health care. BIG SKY Treatment conducts a free, confidential clinical assessment to help determine whether outpatient treatment, IOP, or a referral to a higher level of care is the right fit for where you are. Calls are answered 24/7 at (406) 309-7500.
