WHAT IS BENZODIAZEPINE ABUSE?

Benzodiazepines, commonly known as benzos, are a class of medications prescribed for anxiety, seizures, and insomnia. Benzo drug abuse develops when the brain becomes reliant on the calming effects of them, making normal functioning without them increasingly difficult. Prolonged or inappropriate use of benzodiazepines disrupts the body’s natural chemical balance, leading to intense cravings and benzo withdrawal symptoms when one attempts to quit.

BENZODIAZEPINE ABUSE RISKS

Prolonged use of prescribed benzodiazepines significantly increases the risk of developing physical and psychological dependence, which can lead to potentially fatal overdoses, especially when combined with other substances such as alcohol. Common side effects include cognitive impairments, such as memory loss, confusion, and difficulty concentrating. Paradoxically, discontinuing benzos can lead to withdrawal symptoms, such as seizures and tremors, which can be severe and life-threatening.

Benzodiazepines — commonly called benzos — are a class of prescription medications used to treat anxiety, panic disorder, insomnia, and seizures. They work by enhancing the effect of GABA, a neurotransmitter that slows brain activity, producing a calming and sedating effect.

Here are some of the most common types of benzodiazepines:

  • Xanax (Alprazolam) – Commonly prescribed for anxiety and panic disorders.
  • Valium (Diazepam) – Used to treat anxiety, muscle spasms, and seizures.
  • Ativan (Lorazepam) – Prescribed for anxiety, insomnia, and pre-surgical sedation.
  • Klonopin (Clonazepam) – Used for anxiety, panic disorders, and seizures.
  • Librium (Chlordiazepoxide) – Typically used to treat anxiety and alcohol withdrawal.
  • Restoril (Temazepam) – Prescribed for short-term treatment of insomnia.
  • Halcion (Triazolam) – Used to treat short-term insomnia, and sedation dentistry.

BIG SKY Treatment provides behavioral addiction treatment therapy for benzodiazepine dependence and misuse, including dependence that developed through legitimate prescription use as well as non-prescribed use. Over 2 million Americans struggle with benzodiazepine dependence — and many of them never intended to become dependent.

Yes — and this is one of the most important things to understand about benzodiazepine dependence. Physical dependence on benzos can develop even when they are taken exactly as prescribed, particularly with longer-term use. The brain adapts to the presence of the medication, reducing its natural production of calming neurotransmitters. Over time, the medication that once relieved anxiety can become something the brain cannot function without.

This does not mean the person did anything wrong. Prescription-related benzo dependence is common, clinically recognized, and highly treatable. Many people who seek help for benzodiazepine dependence were never misusing their medication — they simply developed a dependence their prescribing provider did not anticipate or address.

If you are taking benzos as prescribed and finding it impossible to reduce or stop, that experience is worth discussing with a clinician. Call (406) 309-7500 for a free, confidential consultation.

Benzodiazepine dependence can be difficult to recognize, particularly when the drug was originally prescribed for a legitimate condition. Signs span physical, psychological, and social domains.

Physical signs include increased tolerance — needing a higher dose to achieve the same effect — withdrawal symptoms such as tremors, sweating, and insomnia when doses are reduced or missed, nausea, and muscle cramps.

Psychological signs include persistent anxiety or depression that feels worse than before starting the medication, preoccupation with obtaining and using benzos, memory difficulties, and cognitive impairment including confusion and difficulty concentrating.

Social signs include strained relationships at home or work, declining performance at school or in professional settings, and financial difficulties related to obtaining the medication.

If these patterns feel familiar — especially if attempts to reduce or stop use have been difficult or produced distressing symptoms — speaking with a clinician is an important next step.

Yes — and this applies whether the benzodiazepines were prescribed or not. Benzo withdrawal is one of the most medically serious withdrawal syndromes, comparable in risk to alcohol withdrawal. Stopping abruptly or reducing doses too quickly can trigger severe anxiety, tremors, insomnia, hallucinations, and in serious cases seizures — which can be life-threatening.

The risk is higher for people who have been taking benzos for a longer period, at higher doses, or who have previously experienced withdrawal symptoms when stopping. Even people on therapeutic doses prescribed by a doctor can experience significant withdrawal if they stop too quickly.

Do not attempt to stop benzodiazepines without medical supervision. BIG SKY Treatment does not provide medical detoxification services. If you or a loved one needs a medically supervised taper or detox before beginning behavioral treatment, call (406) 309-7500 and our admissions team will help connect you with the appropriate level of care. Once medically stable, BIG SKY Treatment can provide the structured behavioral programming that supports lasting recovery.

No. BIG SKY Treatment specializes exclusively in behavioral addiction treatment therapy. We do not provide medical detoxification, medically supervised tapering, or medication-assisted treatment (MAT).

Because benzodiazepine withdrawal carries serious medical risks, most people with significant benzo dependence will need a medically supervised detox or taper program before beginning outpatient behavioral treatment. Our admissions team can help coordinate a referral to an appropriate medical facility for that step. Once you are medically stable and cleared for outpatient care, BIG SKY Treatment provides the evidence-based behavioral programming that addresses the psychological, emotional, and behavioral dimensions of benzo dependence.

Not sure whether medical detox is needed before you can start? Call (406) 309-7500 and our clinical team will help assess your situation.

BIG SKY Treatment’s benzo program draws on evidence-based behavioral therapies specifically suited to the psychological dimensions of benzodiazepine dependence. These include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which addresses the anxiety-driven thought patterns and coping mechanisms that often underlie benzo use; Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which builds distress tolerance and emotional regulation skills that reduce reliance on benzos to manage overwhelming feelings; Motivational Interviewing (MI), which supports engagement and commitment to change; and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), particularly effective when benzo use is rooted in trauma, PTSD, or adverse life experiences.

Treatment is delivered through individual therapy, group therapy, and family therapy within a trauma-informed clinical framework. For clients at our Kalispell location, Experiential Therapy — including equine therapy, wilderness therapy, art therapy, and music therapy — is integrated directly into the program.

The relationship between benzos and anxiety is one of the most clinically complex in addiction medicine. Benzodiazepines are frequently prescribed for anxiety — and they work, at least in the short term. The problem is that the brain adapts to their calming effect over time, which means that as tolerance develops, the baseline anxiety level rises. Many people find that the anxiety they originally took benzos to manage becomes significantly worse when they reduce or stop use — a phenomenon called rebound anxiety or benzodiazepine-induced anxiety.

This creates a painful cycle: the medication that was prescribed to treat anxiety is now driving anxiety, and stopping it feels impossible because of the very symptoms it is no longer managing. At BIG SKY Treatment, this cycle is addressed directly through behavioral therapies that build genuine anxiety management skills — skills that do not depend on a medication to function. For clients with a diagnosed anxiety disorder, our dual diagnosis approach treats both the benzo dependence and the underlying anxiety concurrently.

Yes — and it frequently does. Benzodiazepines are prescribed for anxiety, panic disorder, PTSD, insomnia, and other conditions, meaning many people with benzo dependence have an underlying mental health condition that was being managed — or masked — by the medication. Common co-occurring conditions include generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, depression, PTSD, and trauma-related disorders.

Treating benzo dependence without addressing the underlying mental health condition significantly increases the risk of returning to use — because the original distress that drove the prescription remains unresolved. BIG SKY Treatment’s dual diagnosis approach addresses both the dependence and any co-occurring mental health conditions within the same integrated program, building genuine coping capacity rather than substituting one management strategy for another.

Yes. BIG SKY Treatment’s Adolescent Outpatient Program addresses benzodiazepine dependence in teens as well as adults. Adolescent benzo dependence can develop through prescription use — benzos are sometimes prescribed to teens for anxiety or sleep disorders — as well as through recreational use. The developmental risks of benzo dependence in adolescents are significant, as the brain is still forming and particularly vulnerable to the effects of CNS depressants.

Our adolescent program uses age-appropriate therapeutic approaches with structured family involvement throughout. Treatment is available in person at our Kalispell, Montana location and via Virtual IOP across our full service area. Call (406) 309-7500 or submit our verification form to confirm coverage and availability for adolescent benzo treatment.

Yes. Most major insurance plans cover outpatient treatment for benzodiazepine dependence, and BIG SKY Treatment works with a broad range of carriers including Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana, PacificSource, Allegiance by Cigna, Montana Medicaid, TRICARE, and TriWest. BIG SKY Treatment is an in-network provider with PacificSource Health Plans. Federal mental health parity laws require most plans to cover substance use disorder treatment at the same level as other medical care.

Submit our confidential online verification form or call (406) 309-7500 – our admissions team will contact your insurance provider directly and confirm your benefits within one hour during regular business hours. There is no obligation to begin treatment after verification.

The first step is a conversation — and we are here whenever you are ready. Call (406) 309-7500 any time, day or night, or reach out through our website. Our admissions team will conduct a free, confidential clinical assessment to understand your situation, evaluate whether medically supervised detox or tapering is needed before behavioral treatment can safely begin, identify any co-occurring mental health conditions, and determine the right level of care.

We verify your insurance before your first session so there are no financial surprises. Benzodiazepine addiction treatment is available in person at our Kalispell, Montana location and via Virtual IOP across Montana, Colorado, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Massachusetts, including members of Indian Reservations in those states. Same-day consultations are often available.
