FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Browse our FAQ for clear, concise answers to common inquiries about our programs and services.

BIG SKY Treatment offers behavioral addiction treatment therapy for a wide range of substance use disorders. Substances we commonly treat include alcohol, opioids, fentanyl, heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, benzodiazepines, oxycodone, marijuana, and kratom — as well as gambling and other behavioral addictions.

More broadly, we work with anyone whose substance use may benefit from evidence-based behavioral therapy. If you are unsure whether your situation is a fit for our programs, call (406) 309-7500 and our clinical team will help figure that out during a free, confidential consultation.

Treatment is available in person at our Kalispell, Montana location and via Virtual IOP across Montana, Colorado, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Massachusetts, including members of Indian Reservations in those states.

The clearest sign is this: you want to stop or cut back, but you can’t — or you keep using even though it’s causing real problems in your life. That might mean strained relationships, trouble at work, health concerns, financial stress, or legal issues. It might also mean withdrawal symptoms when you try to stop, or needing more of a substance over time to feel the same effect.

You don’t need to have hit rock bottom to reach out. Many people who benefit most from treatment are still working, still connected to family, and still functioning — they’re just struggling in ways that feel harder and harder to manage alone. Early help typically leads to better outcomes.

If any of this sounds familiar, a clinical assessment is a good next step. BIG SKY Treatment offers free, confidential assessments — call (406) 309-7500 or reach out through our website to get started.

Outpatient treatment means you come in for structured therapy sessions on a scheduled basis and go home afterward. You keep your daily life — your job, your family, your community — while receiving clinical support for your recovery. Inpatient or residential rehab means living at the facility for the duration of the program, typically 30 to 90 days.

Outpatient is a strong fit for people with a stable home environment who don’t need round-the-clock medical supervision. One of its real advantages is that you practice recovery skills in your actual life between sessions — not just in a controlled environment. That can make the skills stick more effectively over the long term.

BIG SKY Treatment offers Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and standard outpatient care. We conduct individual clinical assessments to determine which level of care is the right fit for where you are in your recovery.

No — and it is important to know this before reaching out. BIG SKY Treatment specializes exclusively in behavioral addiction treatment therapy, which means evidence-based clinical and therapeutic programming that addresses the psychological, emotional, and behavioral dimensions of substance use. We do not provide medical detox or medication-assisted treatment (MAT).

For some substances — particularly alcohol, benzodiazepines, and opioids — stopping suddenly carries real medical risks, and detox needs to happen in a medically supervised setting before behavioral treatment can safely begin. If that applies to your situation, our admissions team can help connect you with the right detox facility. Once you are medically stable, BIG SKY Treatment can provide the structured behavioral programming that supports lasting recovery.

Not sure whether you need detox first? Call (406) 309-7500 and our clinical team will help you figure out the right first step.

Our addiction programs are built around evidence-based approaches that have strong clinical track records for substance use disorders. The core modalities we use include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which helps identify and change the thought patterns and triggers behind substance use; Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which builds emotional regulation and the ability to handle distress without turning to substances; Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), which is particularly effective when addiction is rooted in unresolved trauma; and Motivational Interviewing (MI), which helps strengthen a person’s own reasons and readiness for change.

These are delivered through individual therapy, group therapy, and family therapy sessions. All treatment is grounded in a trauma-informed framework — meaning we look at what happened to you, not just what you’re struggling with now.

For clients at our Kalispell location, we also integrate Experiential Therapy — equine therapy, wilderness therapy, art therapy, and music therapy — directly into the treatment program. These approaches reach parts of the healing process that talk therapy alone doesn’t always access, particularly for trauma-rooted addiction.

Addiction and mental health rarely travel alone. Research consistently shows that people with untreated mental health conditions — anxiety, depression, PTSD, trauma — are significantly more likely to develop substance use disorders, often as a way of managing overwhelming emotional pain. And prolonged substance use changes brain chemistry in ways that worsen or trigger mental health symptoms, even in people who had no prior history.

When both are present at the same time, it is called a co-occurring disorder or dual diagnosis. Treating only one side of that equation — addressing the addiction but not the anxiety, or the depression but not the drinking — leaves the other condition to drive relapse. The most effective approach treats both concurrently, within the same integrated program.

That integrated approach is what BIG SKY Treatment is built around. Our programs are designed from the ground up to address substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions together — not as separate issues managed by separate teams.

Yes. BIG SKY Treatment’s Adolescent Outpatient Program is built specifically for teens facing substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health challenges. Adolescent addiction has its own dynamics — developmental, social, and family — that call for a different clinical approach than adult treatment. Our adolescent program uses age-appropriate therapeutic methods and keeps families actively involved throughout.

Adolescent addiction treatment is available in person at our Kalispell, Montana location and via Virtual IOP across our full service area. Most major insurance plans cover adolescent outpatient treatment. Call (406) 309-7500 or submit our verification form to confirm coverage under your specific plan.

It depends — and that is an honest answer, not a dodge. The right duration varies based on the substance involved, how long and how heavily someone has been using, whether there are co-occurring mental health conditions, and how the individual responds to treatment.

At BIG SKY Treatment, most clients engage in outpatient or IOP programming for eight to sixteen weeks. Progress is assessed regularly and treatment plans are adjusted along the way. Some people step down to lower-intensity aftercare after completing their primary program; others need longer at the IOP level before that transition makes sense.

The goal is lasting recovery — not finishing a program on a fixed schedule. BIG SKY Treatment’s aftercare and alumni support are available after the primary treatment phase to help maintain momentum over the long term.

Yes. Most major insurance plans cover outpatient addiction treatment, and BIG SKY Treatment works with a broad range of carriers — including Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana, PacificSource, Allegiance by Cigna, Montana Medicaid, TRICARE, and TriWest. BIG SKY Treatment is an in-network provider with PacificSource Health Plans. Federal mental health parity laws also require most plans to cover addiction treatment at the same level as other medical care.

The fastest way to know what your plan covers is to submit our online verification form or call (406) 309-7500. Our admissions team will contact your insurance provider directly and get back to you within one hour. There is no obligation to begin treatment after verification.

Reaching out is the hardest part — and we make everything after that as straightforward as possible.

Call (406) 309-7500 any time — admissions are answered 24/7 — or reach out through our website. We will start with a free, confidential clinical assessment to understand your situation, identify any co-occurring mental health conditions, and figure out the right level of care. We verify your insurance before your first session so there are no financial surprises, and we walk you through everything before you make any commitment.

Treatment is available in person at our Kalispell, Montana location and via Virtual IOP across Montana, Colorado, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Massachusetts, including members of Indian Reservations in those states. Same-day consultations are often available.
